2013 Brake Authority Enduro Series, France

enduroseries2013_01

In their finest Franglais, the organisers write…

For the 3rd year in a row, the Enduro Series will serve as support for the FFC French Enduro Cup. We are proud to announce you the 2013 calendar. The 9th season of this incredibly successful series will once again establish the uncontestable national enduro hierarchy.

With classics and novelties this year regarding riding spots.

Classics with Val d’Allos and Valloire, two legendary races for any serious enduro rider. Continuity also with Samoëns which was highly acclaimed in 2012 thanks to the quality of its trails.

On the novelties side, Val d’Isère, the well-known Haute Tarentaise resort which is used to organizing international sporting events, is entering the Enduro Series.

Finally Blausasc, Fabien Barel’s backyard, will end the season with a rally format; a landscape and trails that saw the birth of some of the best French riders, the season finale will be hot.

Entries will be open from the 1st of March and we strongly recommend you to read the rules and regulations of the races. Some modifications will be brought to match the Enduro World Series that is due to become the reference international series.

Also note that two rounds, Val d’Allos and Val d’Isère will also be part of the Enduro World Series calendar.
On the sponsor side, we appreciate the fidelity of the brands Urge Bike Products, Royal Racing, Fox Racing Shox and Brake Authority, the latter becoming the title name of the series.

Big brands and retailers are also joining: Michelin, Mavic and Probikeshop, and we’d like to thank them for their support to the sport.

The succession of Rémy Absalon & Anaïs Pajot, 2012 winners, is due to be highly contested as the level keeps on growing with a new generation of multi-talented young guns pushing behind.

Thank you for your support and we’ll see you very soon on the Brake Authority Enduro Series 2013.

Rd1, Samoens, 22-23 June.
Rd2, Val d’Allos, 29-30 June.
Rd3, Valloire, 3-4 August.
Rd4, Val d’Isere, 24-25 August.

2013 Mondraker Gravity Rally, July, Exmoor UK

gravity2103

Press Release…

Mondraker Gravity Rally returns to Exmoor!

2012 was the year that Gravity Enduro really established itself in the UK. Mondraker Gravity was probably the least serious Gravity Enduro that the UK has seen but the riders had a riot; the riding was good, the atmosphere relaxed and it even managed to get some sunshine. World Champ Fabien Barel was kicking about the arena and riding, there was even a DJ and bar with some free Exmoor ale.

The good news is that Mondraker Gravity returns for summer 2013. July 6th/7th sees the event roll into the small village of Porlock, taking over the National Trust’s Holnicote Estate once again and boasting two days of riding action, plenty of opportunity to explore Exmoor and again have the Exmoor Ales bar, mega prize raffle and stands and tech support from some of the best names in mountain biking.

sg14

There’s a completely new route, more timed stages and more entertainment to make the event even bigger and better than 2012. As in 2012 the timed stages are all downhill, there’s no pressure to rush between stages.

Organiser Steve Toze said, “Mondraker Gravity went way better than we’d hoped in 2012, the format is so good as it gives you all the fun of competition against the clock (and against your mates) but with plenty of time to relax and enjoy your surroundings. It’s no wonder it’s taking over the racing scene and we’re glad to be part of that again in 2013. This event suits veterans of Gravity Enduro but all the trails are natural so suit any competent mountain biker which really adds to the vibe of the event.”

photo

Here’s the plan:

Friday

Campsite open in the afternoon and plenty of chance to explore and ride the trails of Exmoor (and last year’s route if you fancy it)

Saturday

12pm – Stages open, starts with the Saturday loop, two timed stages. Post a time on each stage at some point during the afternoon.

5pm – Saturday stages close, bar is open, food is cooking and band warms up for entertainment in the main arena.

Sunday

10am – Riders head off onto the Sunday stages. These are reworks of the two Saturday stages, plus two more stages including a descent off the mighty Dunkery Beacon.

3pm – Prizes, lunch cooking and presentations.

Entry is open now at www.ridegravity.co.uk, it’s £40 for the first 300 riders with a free pair of RWD brake pads for all entrants, free pint of Exmoor ale and some basic free camping for the weekend too.

More news on sponsors, attendees and other things that are happening will be available in the new year, or follow us on facebook (facebook.com/spikesports).

2013 Queen Elizabeth Country Park Gravity Enduro, July, Hampshire UK

QECP GE2

The QECP guys write…

Us band of merry volunteer shovel jockeys at QECP, known as the QECP Collective, will be hosting our own gravity enduro race on 21st July 2013! It is sure to be a banger with prizes including a holiday for two with Pure Mountains in Spain’s Sierra Nevada, a pair of Marzocchi forks, Dainese pads, Exempt Clothing T shirts and much more up for grabs. Chris Smith has already signed up for the race which will be held on brand new, purpose built singletrack.

Put the date in your diary now and keep an eye out for when registration will open, as it is sure to be a popular event. In the mean time the Collective will be beavering away in secret, making the best race course possible while trying not to be washed away in the driving rain or being turned into a brass monkey.

All profits from the race will go towards improving and expanding the trail network at QECP. As with everything done so far, it is done for free, because of the love and passion we have for mountain biking and giving people fun trails to ride. So if you see one of us shovel jockeys around (most commonly found at our registered trading office of the Denmead Queen pub in Waterlooville) then feel free to buy as a beer and have a chat.

A big thank you to our sponsors for the race, Pure Mounatins, Windwave (Marzocchi and Dainese) and as always the amazing guys at Exempt Clothing. Your generosity continues to show why mountain biking has the best community in the world.

Viva la trail revolution!

QECP GE1

QECP Is located 1 mile south of Petersfield, Hampshire. It takes about 1 hour from south London.

If you can make the race it would be good, the money will be going back in to the local MTB trails. Keep in touch with updates on www.qecptrailcollective.co.uk and www.facebook.com/qecptrailbuilding

Specialized-SRAM Enduro Series 2013, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland

Specialized-SRAM Enduro Series_Logo.jpg

Info from the organisers…

The Specialized-SRAM Enduro Series will enter the second round next year, with the dates now set. But the change is not only in the title, the number of races has also increased.

The format Enduro is the hot talk of the town at the moment, and so the relatively new discipline gets more and more attention. A series was first held last year in German-speaking countries, and after a successful start it goes into the second season. The aim to have more events has become reality; therefore there are seven races in four different countries on the schedule for next year. Next to the three established races (Winterberg won’t be part anymore) there are four new, but not unknown, places in the calendar to hold the additional four events. The dates are the following:

Rd1, 27/28 April 2013, Treuchtlingen (GER)
Rd2, 04/05 May 2013, Riva del Garda (ITA)
Rd3, 25/26 May 2013, Samerberg (GER)
Rd4, 15/16 June 2013, Willingen (GER)
Rd5, 06/07 July 2013, Kirchberg (AUT)
Rd6, 27/28 July 2013, Kronplatz (ITA)
Rd7, 12/13 October 2013, Flims/Laax (SUI)

But not only the race calendar was extended; there is also a change in the title of the series. It will be known from now on as Specialized-SRAM Enduro Series, as SRAM clearly positions itself not only as main sponsor with the addition ‘powered by…’ as last year, but as title sponsor next to Specialized. This is to highlight the involvement and strengthen its recognition of the format and the series. iXS will also join the party as sponsor again next to the two title sponsors. It looks like all is set for the next season as the series doesn’t need to hide behind the since quite a few years established events anymore.

2013 Enduro1/X-Fusion Series, Southern UK

Words from the organisers…

In 2012 we had a great cross section of riders from complete newbies to racing, old DH/XC sweats coming out of retirement along with some of the countries current top riders. The main emphasis is, and always will be, to get those weekend warriors into racing for the first time and for it to be an informal and friendly series that allows you to be competitive if you wish or just have laugh and a good day out riding with your mates, the choice is yours!

X-Fusion-Enduro-1-logo

So we will be having four races with three to count towards the series titles.

Race 1: 17th March. Great Wood, Quantock Hills.

An awesome start to the series as this is a stunning area with a great network of trails.

Race 2: 16th June. Forest Of Dean.

We return to the Dean for 2013 as it offers the rider everything in terms of trails and stages and hopefully it will be a bit drier!

Race 3: 15th September. ‘Sprint’ Enduro, Aston Hill.

A bit of a showcase race for Enduro but sorry guys and girls this is a competitive class race only as it will be technical and physically demanding with tight timings. We want to promote this as a race for spectators to come view, cheer and mingle with the racers and see what all the fuss is about. One completion of the course then in for a short break for maintenance and fuel up and then out for another shorter loop. Hopefully we will have some great demo bikes available to try and we are working with the CTC to hopefully bring some fun elements to the day.

Race 4 : 13th October. Swinley Forest (TBC)

Back to Swinley for the grand final. Everyone had a real blast this year and it proved a great area to ride and race and a fitting venue for the final.

We have some great sponsors again this year and more fantastic prizes for the series winners so get the dates in your diary and we look forward to seeing our Enduro regulars along with hopefully, lots of new faces.

Full details can be found on our website – www.enduro1.co.uk

Having-fun-is-compulsory_1

What is Enduro1?

The format of our Enduro1/X-Fusion series follows similar lines to the motorcycle type enduro but I have made a few changes to make for a better mountain bike format. The idea is for the competitor to tackle the course as if they are undertaking a new trail ride for the first time. The event takes the form of riding a route typically between 25-30km interspersed by timed or marked special stages. We normaly have a 10am start with each competitor setting off in one minute intervals. Your timings will be made available one week before the race and this will give you the time you need to reach the next stage by and the distance. Timed special stages have a downhill bias incorporating climbs and undulating terrain so good all around ability is required. Special stages may not be pre-ridden the same as motorcycle enduro rules but may be walked. This will show your skill as a rider at reading and negotiating new terrain at speed and unlike many of the gravity type enduro events we have included skill stages similar to motorcycle trials to add variety and elements of mountain marathons regarding the need to carry the correct equipment and be self sufficient.

The routes connecting the special stages are also timed but are ridden at an easier pace. The advantages of this new form of racing is it favours the all round rider rather than the XC whippet or the downhill demon and if you are already an XC, Trail or All Mountain rider you do not require a new type of bike as yours is already suited perfectly to this form of event. We had a fantastic turn out for teams in our first year and are keen to get more teams entered for the next series so, if for example, you are a local bike store, group of friends or MTB club then put a team together and lets see who will be the team to beat in 2013! The format is a bit more relaxed than normal X country type events and hopefully will allow you to socialise with fellow competitors or team mates in-between special stages. Beware though, this is called ‘enduro’ because you need to put the miles in and for every downhill Special Stage you will have to climb up again which, mixed with the adrenaline pump from racing the special stages, will ensure you have a good workout and no doubt feel it come Monday morning…. just like for real!

How the series works

The series is spread over four races held across the Southern UK with your top three results to count towards the series championship which will be awarded at the last race of the series. If this is tied then it will be decided on the fastest times from the team chase stages. Entries will be open 60 days before each event.

Prizes will be awarded at the last race of the series so you must be present to receive your prize.

How to enter

Entries will be open in the Enduro1 Shop 60 days prior to each race. When entering please use the comments section at the end of the ordering process to tell me if you wish to race alongside a friend who has entered the same class. If entering a team or you have entered for more than one then give your team mates/friends names and in which order you wish to set off. If anyone is sponsored please give your sponsors name as well. For the senior and veteran classes you will need to indicate that you wish to compete in these classes and give your date of birth. Read the team rules for further information regarding ride order. Please ensure you have read all the race info and bring the right equipment with you as stated in the rules as there will be scrutineering.

Results

Results will be posted at the latest on the website by the following Wednesday after each race. The winners results will be worked out at the last race in order for the prize giving to be carried out although the full results will still only be posted at the latest by the following Wednesday. Sorry it has to be done this way but we cannot afford expensive electronic timing without putting the entry cost up which we are not willing to do.

Volunteers

We need volunteers for marshals so if you are local to the venues and would like to help then please contact me. I am offering a free ride for anyone that can provide a marshal but you will need to be local to the venue as it will require a couple of hours training on a day/evening before the race. Any other offers of help are always greatly appreciated.

Report on the 2012 Specialized Enduro Series powered by SRAM

The organisers write…

“As the first season of the Specialized Enduro Series powered by SRAM has been rounded off, it’s time for the first summary. One thing is crystal clear: The next season is going to start under the unchanged sponsorship of Specialized, SRAM and iXS.

“Late in 2011, the announcement of the Enduro Series 2012 for the German speaking world not only triggered great interested but also high expectations. Back in 2011 Enduro races had already been well established in other European countries whereas the format was relatively new in Germany. As a result it was vital for the first season to find a common denominator for Enduro races.

“It had to be clearly defined what the races should be like in all the different regions. Although a straightforward definition was fixed rather quickly, the debut in Winterberg was not without complications. Riders quickly learned that they had to have more stamina compared to races such as the Enduro Challenge at the iXS Dirt Masters Festival (2010 and 2011).

“It is worth noting that the concept of Enduro races has evolved by the cooperation of participants, organizers and sponsors. Looking back, not only the atmosphere was relaxed at all venues, also the races themselves were well-balanced despite the differing terrain. Whether you take races in the Alps (e.g. in Kirchberg) or the ones in the Central German Uplands (e.g. Treuchtlingen), riders were presented with similar conditions.

“It was clear from the outset that one could not expect a totally uniform race series, but the way is paved for a longterm commitment. The preparations are in full swing and new venues will be hosts for the next season. Unfortunately, Winterberg is not an option anymore, but it played an important role in bringing the series forward.

“The last season saw 972 participants. Subtracting those who competed in more than one race, 758 different participants from 16 countries are left. Among them were internationally renowned riders such as Jerome Clementz (FRA – Cannondale), Ralf Näf (SUI – Multivan Merida Biking Team), René Wildhaber (SUI – Trek), Marco Fidalgo (POR – Team Berg Cycles) and Nicolas Lau (FRA – Cube Action Team). These figures underpin how popular the series is. For next year we expect even more riders who want to experience competitiveness in an easy-going atmosphere.

“As always feel free to go to enduroseries.net and facebook.com/enduroseries.net for more information. Here, the dates and venues for next season will be shown.”

Giant 2W Gravity Enduro 2013, February, Rotorua, New Zealand

The Giant 2W Gravity Enduro is an event for everyone from the novice to the elite athlete, young to old. It draws in the riders who seek to have fun and hone their skills on flowing downhill trails. The beauty of the event is that it can be won by anyone from weekend social recreational warrior, to solo cross-country machine, or mad downhill rider. Skills, fitness and tactics play an equal role in the execution of each ‘Race Stage’ timed run over the course of the event to decide who will be crowned Gravity Enduro champions.

The Giant 2W Gravity Enduro is one of the final events in the 10 day long Rotorua Bike Festival. The Giant 2W Gravity Enduro will start and finish under a big gantry right in the heart of Rotorua (in the middle of Eat Street adjacent to the Village Green and Lakefront). Riders will roll out in groups of five every 15 seconds. Journeying out and back via a marked off-road route around beautiful scenic trails on Rotorua’s lake edge and through the Sulphur point geothermal wonderland; riders will reach and experience the renowned Whakarewarewa Forest containing a network of arguably the best purpose built mountain bike trails in the world.

Provided with a map, inside the forest riders select their own route to complete a number of ‘Race Stage’ electronically timed runs of 10-20min duration on specific linked trails.

On what are commonly known as untimed ‘Touring Stages’, riders may cycle, push their bikes or catch shuttle bus transport to the top of hills where the Race Stage starts are located.

There will be a ‘Feed Station’ and ‘Technical Zone’ located in the heart of the forest at the bottom of two of the Race Stages for competitors to purchase great coffee from the Flying Espresso; wholesome home baking from the Mistress of Cakes; fine beautiful hot food from Deejay’s Gourmet Griller, plus get assistance with any mechanical repairs required. So be sure to take some cash with you!

But keep an eye on your watch because you have a set time to complete the Race Stages and return back to the finish in town before you begin to accumulate a time penalty.

Entry numbers are limited to 600.

Make Up A Team: Friends, family and workmates are encouraged to put together all male/female or mixed social teams of five riders to do the event together for the opportunity to rank as a group and vie for team performance prizes. All team riders individual results will be accumulated to give the teams overall result. Riders will be able to submit their teams by completing a “My Giant 2W Gravity Enduro Team” form and dropping it in the ‘Team Registration Box’ at the Race Pack Pick-up and Late Registration. Team submissions will close at 9:00am on Sunday 17th February 2013. No late submissions will be accepted. Mixed teams must have two members of the opposite sex.

Online entries close 11:59 pm Thursday 14th February 2013 or when maximum entry numbers have been reached (whichever occurs first).

2013 Enduro World Series Rumours Confirmed

Official statement from the bods in charge…

The Enduro World Series will take place in 2013, thanks to the efforts of Chris Ball, formerly of the UCI, and the unified event organizing powers of the Enduro Series (Coupe de France), SuperEnduro and Crankworx. As a seven-stop tour taking place over the course of the entire 2013 mountain bike season, including the Enduro des Nations, the Enduro World Series aims to build a lasting event series for riders, teams and the mountain bike industry.

“I’ve heard the demand for this type of series for quite some time. Along with SuperEnduro, the Enduro Series and Crankworx, we want to develop the sport of Enduro mountain bike racing so it can grow as a sustainable worldwide discipline,” says Chris Ball, managing director of the Enduro World Series. “The execution of this tour for 2013 has been of the utmost importance to the organizing teams at Crankworx, the Enduro Series and SuperEnduro. We aim for its existence under our collective umbrella to cater to the needs of athletes, the mountain biking public and the bike industry.”

While the racing calendar for 2013 will be released on Tuesday, December 4, the Enduro World Series will be the official global race series of the newly formed Enduro Mountain Bike Association. Made up of a board of directors including Chris Ball, Fred Glo of the Enduro Series, Enrico Guala of the SuperEnduro Series and Darren Kinnaird of Crankworx Events Inc., the Enduro Mountain Bike Association will look to support from the riders, teams and industry.

More information regarding supporter and membership packages will be released soon, including the launch of the Enduro Mountain Bike Association website.

2013 Enduro World Series?

Quote from enduro-mtb.com

“Then a small group of ” insiders“ centered around Enrico Guala, Franco Monchiero (both organizers of the SuperEnduro in Italy), and Chris Ball worked hard on putting a world series together in cooperation with other organizers all over the world.

“As Chris Ball, during his time at the UCI, had already prepared a calendar for 2013, it’s left no doubt that some of these venues will be part of the series: Lake Garda Festival (Italy), Canadian Open Enduro in Whistler, SuperEnduro Finale Ligure (Italy), Trestle Enduro in Winter Park (Colorado, USA). Without any doubt, there will be a venue in France as well. Furthermore, the gossip says that UK and Spain could host venues as well.”

The signing of this team strengthens Norco’s commitment to the growing Enduro race market and illustrates an increased investment in the 27.5″/650B Range and Sight models.

The Norco World Enduro Team is based out of Switzerland and team leaders Lukas Anrig and Ludo May are joined by Lorraine Truong and Michael Schärer to complete the stacked roster. Bringing to the table top results nationally and internationally, these four riders will travel the world circuit proving the capability and potential of the new line of Norco 27.5″ wheeled Killer B bikes. This team is a partnership that runs much deeper than a traditional rider-sponsor relationship. Working directly with these riders will serve as a valuable feedback and product development channel for the continuous development of the Range and Sight bikes. This relationship model is based on the Dirt Norco Team and what has been done with them and the Aurum DH Race bike.

Peter Stace-Smith, Norco’s PR-Marketing Manager, states “we are super excited to be creating the Norco World Enduro Team for 2013 and beyond. Our Sight and Range Killer B models are the perfect tool for the team and we are excited to see our all-mountain bikes being proved on the international stage.”

Norco’s long history of sponsoring and supporting competitive cyclists reaches back to 1980, when the bicycle brand developed its first competition-level cycling team. Since then, Norco has invested consistently in its sponsorship program, supporting the development of talented athletes competing in a wide range of disciplines: Road, Cyclocross, Cross-Country, Downhill, Enduro, BMX and Slopestyle. Norco’s sponsored riders not only serve as brand ambassadors, they also provide invaluable product feedback that enables Norco’s bike design team to refine designs and create some of the best bicycles on the market.

The Norco World Enduro Team will be racing Norco Range Killer B and Sight Killer B bikes. The new 27.5″ wheeled bikes are designed to compete in the diverse and challenging conditions found in these races. Bike choice is crucial in Enduro racing and the combination of pedaling efficiency and suspension performance makes these bikes the perfect tool to propel the Norco World Enduro Team to the top of the podium.

Exclusive interview with Trans-Provence chief Ash Smith

The Trans-Provence is a pioneering event in the world of Enduro racing. A week of self-propelling across the French Maritime Alps with numerous timed special stages along arguably the best technical singletrack in the world.

The TP is in a lot of mountainbikers’ Must-Do-Before-I-Die lists.

You can read all about the Trans-Provence on our event page.

We grabbed a few minutes with TP’s mastermind Ash Smith to talk all things Enduro…

Enduro Info: What are the USP’s of Enduro racing (as opposed to XC, DH)? Why race an Enduro?

Ash: Because it will tell you how good of an all-round mountain biker you are (and you’ll have a great time, but that’s “just” a by-product).

The incorrect notion that XC racing tests the all-round mountain biker “because it’s up and down” is dying out, happily. Every mountain biker on this planet takes longer to ride uphill than they do to ride downhill and hence, to test the best all-round rider (and let’s say for the sake of argument that the best rider is made by the best combination of ascending fitness and descending skill, not forgetting that long descents also take it out of you physically) you must make sure that, distance-wise, the amount of timed uphill is much less than the amount of timed downhill. This is what Enduro racing does, this is what Enduro racing is.

Q: What’s good about the current Enduro racing scene?

A: Two things…

Well-designed Enduro race itineraries/courses are a true test of the complete mountain biker, much more so than either XC or DH racing.

The way that Enduro events are inherently set-out, are conducive to lengthy stints of riding together untimed. This makes for friendly atmospheres, lots of banter and great fun which is surely win-win-win (organisers, participants, industry).

Q: What’s bad about the current Enduro racing scene?

A: I wouldn’t say that anything is inherently bad about it.

However, Enduro is in a good place right now, something that I think the MTB industry has started to appreciate and will try to make the most of it. The people who deserve to ride the wave of Enduro’s current success are the top European Enduro riders who have already been in the game for so long and have worked (ridden!) so hard to essentially shape it. Your Jérôme Clementzs, your Remy Absalons, your Florian Golays and a good handful of others. They are Enduro.

What I don’t like is the thought of high-profile riders coming into Enduro from other disciplines and attempting to dictate how Enduro should be in terms of format and rules, especially if by bowing to these demands, we’d move away from Enduro’s original defining principles. I haven’t seen much of this yet, but I’ve seen some. That’s the only potentially bad thing about the otherwise brilliant current Enduro racing scene.

Q: Is the term Enduro still being misused, badly applied? How do you do define “Enduro” to people?

A: When Enduro racing was started in France in the late nineties, the term was meant to be an acknowledging nod towards Enduro motorcycle competition, i.e. the fact that we had taken on their idea of timed special stages and untimed (but often time-limited) link stages. In the early noughties, several British and antipodean race organisers then heard the term “Enduro” in mountain biking and assumed that it referred to the “endurance” aspect of long cross-country races. Hence, several of these types of races became referred to as Enduros in countries like England and Australia. Everywhere else, that was generally known as “Marathon”, “Marathon XC”.

Actual Enduro has only arrived in the UK relatively recently and the resulting (not unexpected!) name confusion has led to the rather silly need for the term “Gravity Enduro”. I am however fairly convinced that the need for this specific term is diminishing, thanks to a kind of “inadvertent pressure from outside”. For example there is a definite lack of the term “Gravity” preceding “Enduro” on an International level (e.g. thoughout the industry, big races, and so on).

Q: Is the Enduro scene going to splinter into different concepts/aims? Is it big enough to withstand such factions?

I don’t know on either count but, I’d say it’s almost certainly to everyone’s advantage if this DOESN’T happen.

Q: Does each country have its particular style/format of Enduro?

A: The two most marked differences currently are between French and Italian Enduro racing. In France where Enduro was first conceived and the first races happened, riding blind or on-sight was and has always been the name of the game. As such, you aren’t allowed to practise the Special Stages in advance of your timed runs. Conversely, in Italy and many other countries, you are allowed to practise in advance. Everyone makes up their own mind as to which of the two approaches they prefer, however, it’s undeniable that one stays truer to the defining values of Enduro.

In the above, you have my personal opinion. However, I am (at least somewhat of) a realist and I appreciate that due to geographical limitations and/or local knowledge in the places where races are run, it’s very challenging to keep blind riding blind forever. It’s not impossible though.

Q: What would you say are the best Enduro bikes available at the mo?

A: This is a tough one as there are so many decent bikes out there these days which are up to the job, i.e. steepish seat angle, pretty slack head angle, upwards of 140mm travel, and strong. So I’ll go for 3 bikes which I believe to be outstanding:

Cannondale Jekyll: this bike’s Enduro racing accolades speak for themselves, but more than that, the Jekyll rides like a dream. So fun, so efficient.

Titus El Guapo: good geometry, good weight, unbelievably affordable.

Mondrakers with “Forward geometry”: fair play to Mondraker for having the nouse to do something different. The long wheelbase has clearly been put there with maximum-stability-whilst-riding-very-fast in mind, but these bikes clearly aren’t a boat in the corners. Seeing top guys like Fabien Barel ride this bike first hand makes me think that Mondraker are definitely on to something.

Q: Moving on to your own highly regarded event, the Trans-Provence. Why did you start TP?

A: It came to me in my sleep one night in 2008. After that, I felt I had no choice. The reason that I continue to do Trans-Provence is that it lets me express my vision of what I think mountain biking is or should be. When I say “I”… what I actually mean is “we”. The Trans-Provence operation is a big team of very dedicated, professional and above all, good people.

Q: What is TP’s main USP (other than its location)?

Mavic® Trans-Provence is still the only week-long itinerant Enduro race ever run, worldwide.

Q: Have you any hints about new things for TP 2013?

A: Trans-Provence 2013 is 6 days instead of 7. I have sensed for the last little while that, at the intensity one rides and races Trans-Provence, 7 days is probably one day too long. There will be something totally new and awesome on Day 1 (think epic ridgelines and unreal views). There will hopefully be a night stage (not all night long, just one short Special Stage).

Trans-Savoie 2013, August, Val d’Isere to Chamonix, France

Here’s the press release in full…

18th-23rd August 2013.

The TRANS-SAVOIE IS THE NEXT EVOLUTION of all-mountain Enduro racing.

6 DAYS ++ 20 TIMED STAGES ++ 20,000M DESCENT ++ 5000M ASCENT

VAL D’ISERE – BOURG ST MAURICE – LES ARCS – MERIBEL – ALBERTVILLE – ARECHES/BEAUFORT – CHAMONIX

An all-new point-to-point stage race 100% focused on technical riding ability and epic adventure, TRANS-SAVOIE joins the dots between skill, athletic fitness, mental determination, and strategic riding on some of the best mountain bike trails in the world.

Open to both Pro and Amateur riders, the week-long TRANS-SAVOIE traverses the stunning French Alps, following in the footsteps of accessible classics such as Passportes Du Soleil and ground-breaking modern Enduro events like Trans–Provence.

The inaugural TRANS-SAVOIE will see the boundaries of Gravity Enduro stage racing taken to a level not yet available in any other event: By fusing the rapid mechanical uplift advantage of France’s extensive ski-lift system with an epic 250Km route that traverses some of the Alps’ finest natural singletrack, the six-day, >20,000m descending statistics speak for themselves.

Adopting a rally-style format, the route consists of several timed, downhill-biased stages each day (typically 4) with a total daily timed descent of 3000-4000 vertical metres – covering a distance of 20-30Km against the clock. Untimed Liaison stages make up the rest of the distance, with the average climb-per-day sitting at ‘only’ 800-1000m vertical, of which 90%+ is climbable without dismounting.

The fully-supported event is the brainchild of the 10-year owner of Alpine guiding operation trailAddiction and uniquely exists by drawing on a collective staff knowledge of 50+ year’s of guiding experience and passion for extracting the very best routes in the Savoie region. The terrain is a blend of spectacular, open and exposed high-alpine and lower-level forested singletrack.

TRANS SAVOIE passes through varied remote and dramatic scenery on its 6-day odyssey, and utilises some of the Alps’ finest and better-known biking destinations (Les Arcs, Tignes) for daily de-briefing. The competitor will also be introduced to some lesser-known gems including Meribel, Areches/Beaufort, and La Rossiere. The affordable all-in race package will include quality accommodation and catering.

The first full event is scheduled for lift-off on 18th-23rd August 2013, with participation limited to a maximum of 50 riders.

The self-supported race entry fee is 895 GBP / 1095 Euros, although we expect most entrants will opt for a full-supported package which includes locally sourced accommodation and full catering , daily kit-transfer, etc.

Entries will open to the general public shortly. With a limited capacity this event is not to be missed – pre-register an interest to receive updates direct from the organisers via the event’s Facebook page:

POC King and Queen of the Hill 2013, May, Glentress, Scotland

25-26 May 2013, Glentress
Event start: Peebles Hotel Hydro

The official POC King and Queen of th Hill website

TweedLove presents the return of our all-mountain enduro race.

We’re delighted to be working with POC again and for 2013 we’re planning an even more epic course – many km of sweet singletrack and quality dirt guaranteed. Last year people were surprised to ride parts of Glentress they had no idea existed and we’ll be including more fantastic descents and the odd cheeky climb again. The format will be similar – a whole lot of fun and quality trails.

Full weekend of top quality riding.
Latest technology (reliable and accurate) chip timing system.
Instant results when you finish.
Personalised pro-style number board with your name and team/club printed on it.
Feed/refreshment stations on course.
Goody bag at sign-on.
Great prizes.
Event village at hq.

The format:

Timed stages on great trails around Glentress, featuring some cracking natural lines and some of the best man-made riding anywhere. You have to complete all the sections – some huge descents, some climbing and linking stages. Your worst stage result will be dropped from your overall result, which means you can choose your tactics.

Practice is on Saturday though some sections will not be open for practice beforehand. The race hq, start and finish is at the legendary Peebles Hotel Hydro. If you’re experienced in these events, you’ll find the course a lot of fun, with some sweet and technical sections of trail to deal with at speed, but the event will also appeal to riders who are keen to have a try at this style of race – you’ll have a blast either way and can choose which sections to smash and when to ease up a bit.

POC King & Queen of the Hill is sponsored by POC.

POC is a Swedish company, built on a strong mission; to do everything they possibly can to save lives and reduce consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes by developing and renewing what personal protection is all about. POC has, in many ways, already set a new standard when it comes to technical solutions, construction, material combinations and engineering. Their clean, minimal and bright helmets, armour, clothing, goggles and sunglasses are a breath of fresh air to the market.

TweedLove 2013 is sponsored by Alpine Bikes http://www.alpinebikes.com/
